Sunday Painters is the sonic brainchild of longtime friends Ron McPherson (guitar, vocals) and Eric Freeman (drums, vocals) — two Detroit musicians who first joined forces as teenagers and never looked back. After years of playing in various Motor City bands, both together and apart, the duo reunited with a shared vision and a new sound: a blast of big-hooked, harmony-heavy, high-voltage Power Pop.
Inspired by the melody-rich legacy of The Beatles and the punch of British Invasion rock — but with a modern twist of thick guitars and crashing choruses — Sunday Painters are all about catchy songs that hit hard and stay stuck in your head. Their tracks are written and arranged entirely by Ron and Eric, who remain the core of the project both live and in the studio. On stage, they’re joined by a rotating cast of top-tier Detroit musicians who bring even more electricity to the performance.
They’ve lit up legendary venues like The Shelter, Small’s, and The Magic Bag, and taken their sound on the road to Chicago and Cleveland. You’ve heard them on WRIF and WHFR, and seen them bring the house down at the Hamtramck Blowout and International Pop Overthrow music festivals. They even came this close to winning the Detroit News Battle of the Bands, finishing an impressive second place.
With two albums under their belt — “Sunday Painters” and “Broken Pieces” — the band continues to crank out melodic rock anthems for fans of heavy guitars and layered harmonies.
The Metro Times calls them:
“Power Pop for fans of the electric guitar.”
Whether you catch them on stage or on one of their albums, Sunday Painters are proof that great songwriting, loud guitars, and killer hooks never go out of style.
